Week 11

How have you, and will you continue to “Learn the 21st Century” and allow your students this experience in your classroom?

In order to teach effectively in the 21st century teachers need to understand and be willing to try new technology. I have had teachers or seen teachers in their own classrooms who are overwhelmed or not sure how to use a certain piece of technology. I don't think that is beneficial to the students. Whether teachers agree or believe students need to be exposed to technology they are not familiar with they need to make an effort to incorporate it into their daily classroom.
In my own classroom I have a promethean board. It projects movies, but I find myself using it more in that manor instead of using to to the full potential. It can do so much more and I find that I revert back to what I am comfortable or familiar with. Again I need to not do this because students deserve as much technology as possible.
As someone who was born in a time that technology and computers were just starting to be incorporated in schools I think it is a bit difficult to remember all the new technology that is available just because I didn't have it when I was in school. One of the most impactful opportunities I think for teachers is to observe how other teachers use new technology with their own students. This will give an idea of the difference the technology can make on the students. It is good to see new technology used a way that is is successful.

What I have learned:
- What 21st century learning is
- The difference between tinkering and hard play
-  How to foster a growth mindset in my students
-  Students need a chance to figure things out on their own
-  It's ok to let them not succeed at something
- Makerspace projects can be incorporated into many contents
- They take a lot of materials, but they don't need to be expensive items
- Teacher learning is as important as student learning when it comes to technology
- Let students create rules for makerspace. It will help them free more connected to the space
- Teachers are good at pretending they know more than they do.
- As teachers it's ok to admit you don't know something
- All schools benefit from Makerspaces, in a multitude of ways
- I get frustrated with the Arduino projects when they didn't work
- I can't work 50+ hours a week and successfully go to school
- Policies
- Coding :)

I want my students to acquire 21st century skills:
- critical thinking and problem solving
- growth mind set
- Collaboration with in the classroom, school, and community
- effective oral and written communication
- Curiosity
