Week 5

What is the relationship between teaching and learning?
As a teacher we expect our students to learn what we are teaching them everyday. We expect them to sit and listen to our lesson and remember all the materials. This for many students is very difficult. I remember growing up having trouble sitting still during my teachers lesson.
As teachers we need to make sure we allow each student to learn the best of their ability. That may mean we need to change how we approach teaching. This for many teachers may be challenging because it means accepting that something we are doing isn't working for a particular student and we need to find a new approach. While this maybe hard it is vital for the learning of all our students.
I think the ability to look at a students performance and understand that we act teachers have a direct affect on their learning is a form of learning for our selves. It is important to realize that we need to learn how to teach in an effective way that allows all our students to perform to the best of their ability.
I think a more simple approach to answering this question is the fact that teachers need to be continuing their education even when they are established teachers. This ensures they have the most up to date research based information and are informed with new curriculum. I like how this forces teachers to go into the shoes of their students a bit to remember what it is like to take a class. They can learn what works for their own learning and what doesn't and possibly apply that to their own classroom.

  1. You made some great points in this post. I agree completely with teachers needing to change how they teach because not all of our students learn the same way. We can't all expect them to perform at their very best if we are only presenting them with one way of learning. For a teacher, continuing education might be one of the most important parts of our career. I think as teachers it is so critical to continue to see what new methods or tools are being used. We don't want to get stuck in our ways with something that we used 10 years ago and keep doing it because it worked back then. Being back in grad school has really made me think about how important learning is and how challenging it can be at times.
