Week 10

Why does Baranof Elementary School need a maker space?
The simple answer to this question is because they are a fun and beneficial space for students, but to convince administration I need to dive deeper.
According to a recent report by the New Media Consortium Horizon Report for 2015 "makerspaces are increasingly being looked to as a method of engaging learners in creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands on design, construction, and iteration." This report also  discussed that makerspaces address the skills students will need to possess in the 21st century. Taking this into account I would approach my administration with this information.

Powerful and empowering ways to learn
When schools have makerspaces it provides students with a powerful context and opportunity to learn and develop new skills. Makerspaces can provide students with a outlet for students, fuel engagement, and curiosity.
Makerspaces also empower students and help them shift from passive consumers of information to creators and innovators.

Learner-centered opportunities
Maker spaces put learners at the center of the educational process and creates opportunities that students may not have in their classrooms. In these rooms teachers are also often learners themselves as they work through difficult or unfamiliar problems. Makerspaces also provide flexible learning arrangements that promote both autonomy and collaboration, allowing students to test out their own ideas.

Authentic learning connected to real world
The authentic learning in a maker space allows students to engage in real world experiences which leads to students seeing beyond their own context to understand the problem. According to an article on Curiosity Commons "makerspaces offer far wider spheres of communication and enables a critical mass of learning to be achieved globally rather than necessarily locally."

Prepare students for future
With maker spaces students are exposed to new skills and technologies, which can open doors to new career paths. Makersapces can help students prepare and even ignore a passion of lifelong learning.

Differentiation and multiple intelligences
Maker spaces are flexible adaptable learning environments that address differentiation and multiple intelligences. This is because the concept of maker spaces is hand son learning. They are reflect community interests and needs and adapt as those interested and needs evolve over time.

Engage community and cross generational learning
Makerspaces invite local experts to share their skills and passions with students so they can share share with others and bring the community into the classroom. In addition to engaging the community these spaces also invite cross-generational learning, which can range from parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Inter-disciplinary reflections of real life
Makerspaces can dissolve the artificial barriers that the school and classroom environment create. Maker spaces promote an innovation blend of disciplines that can ignite problem solving and spark new inventions.

With all this information I think any administrators next question would be how can I help to create a maker space of our building.

  1. Great post! You made some great points on why Baranof Elementary would benefit from a Makerspace. I really liked how you mentioned that a Makerspace would empower students and give them more an experience that is more closely related to the real world. I agree that Makerspaces do benefit our students in many ways and feel like you touched on the big ones. One of the main reasons why I really love the idea of a Makerspace was how it gives students a chance to interact with people in their community who are experts in their skills. I think this kind of an opportunity really gives students a chance to meet someone who they can relate with and get to know. This person can act as a mentor or could be someone they mentor with years down the road. I think in many of the small communities across our state, this is needed more than ever. Nicely done!
